In 2009, at the request of Councilmember Sally Clark and residents, the City Auditor conducted an audit of the City’s district council system.
The audit raised important questions about the role of district councils – such as whether the emphasis is on information sharing or policy – as well as the role of the city in district council governance and support. The Department of Neighborhoods is developing a work plan in response to the audit, which will be presented to the Seattle Public Utilities and Neighborhoods Committee on Tuesday July 13th at 2pm.
To develop this workplan, the City-wide Neighborhood Council (CNC) and Department of Neighborhoods (DON) convened a workgroup of District Council members to create a first draft. A copy of the draft workplan is now posted to the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods/City-wide Neighborhood Council webpage for public review. Public Comments on the draft workplan are being accepted for one more week – through June 28th – and can be emailed to Wendy Watson at email@example.com with “2010-2012 Work Plan” in the subject line.
Here are copies of the audit report:
I look forward to this discussion in July about how we continue to strengthen the District Council system. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the meantime.
